A 61 year old American mountaineer sadly died this Wednesday 21st October, after a 40m fall on the Mont Blanc Massif.
The tragedy occurred around 9pm, while descending the Ginat route on the south face of Les Droites. The victim was accompanied by his 15 year old son at the moment of the accident. Shocked, the teenager immediately called the rescue team.
However, due to the bad weather conditions and low visibility the PGHM could not intervene. Thus, the boy spent the night on a rocky spur, remaining in contact with the rescue team.
Only the next day, around 7:30pm he was recovered and helicopted to the hospital for medical care. Fortunately, he was unharmed and suffered only a mild hypothermia.
An investigation is under way into the possible cause of the tragedy.
