Mont Blanc: an aircraft crashes on the Argentière glacier

Thursday 23 June 2022, a tourist plane crashes at the level of the Argentière Glacier, in the Mont-Blanc massif (4809m) in the Haute-Savoie.

On Thursday 23 June in the afternoon, the small plane took off from the Albertville aerodrome (Savoie) in the direction of the Mont Blanc massif with two people on board, a pilot student and his instructor.

During his flight, the pilot interrupted the radio contact with the ground air traffic control, therefore the prefects of Savoy and Haute-Savoie launched a "SATER" plan (aero-terrestrial rescue).

Search operations to locate the missing aircraft

According to Le Dauphine, search operations to locate the aircraft started at around 10:30pm. However, as night was falling and due to bad weather conditions, the surface of the last place, where the aircraft has been located, could not be searched.

Search operations re-started on Friday 24 June, in the morning at 6:30 a.m., when the Chamonix's Choucas 74 helicopter from PGHM repaired the carcass of the plane in the center of the Argentière glacier, at 2,600 meters altitude.

Unfortunately, the two passagers lost their lives in the plane crash.

An investigation has been opened to determine the exact circumstances of this accident. The PDF press release of the Haute-Savoie prefecture (in french).

All the Chamonix.net team offers its condolences to the families of the victims.
