Living with Avalanches - 10 years ago today - Montroc Avalanche

Montroc receives some of the highest levels of snow in all of France. This particular year received more than average and it had been snowing non stop for days before the avalanche. When the avalanches fell, fifteen of the 19 chalets were empty as the Parisian holidays were to begin in two days. Five people that were trapped were rescued alive. A father of one of the victims has created an avalanche alert system for visitors to the valley that are unaware of the risk. The association is called : Association pour l'information sur les risques d'avalanche et leur prévention (AIRAP). There will be a service held this afternoon at 14h30 (when the avalanche hit 10 yrs ago) in Montroc at the memorial cross.
