On Thursday, 9th July 2015, a climbing expedition to the summit of Mont-Blanc by two Korean climbers, attempting to ascend the mountain without the services of a High Mountain Guide, turned to tragedy.
The accident occurred in the mid-morning at an altitude of about 4200m on Mont Maudit. One climber lost his footing, tripped and fell, taking the other climber with him. The two climbers, roped together fell about 300m down a steep ice slope. One climber died, but the second appears to have only suffered minor injuries.
A High Mountain Guide, climbing with another team, but who witnessed the fall, immediately alerted the PGHM. On arrival at the scene of the accident, the PGHM declared one climber dead and evacuated the second climber by helicopter to hospital in Sallanches. It is reported that he is in stable condition.
