Friday 8 Aug 2014, the Mont-Blanc Tunnel reopens after a temporary closure. The Chamonix authorities were forced to close the tunnel to traffic during the night, due to a flood.
The flood was caused by the "rupture of a huge water pocket" on the mountain. This led to an overflow of Creusaz River.
"Technical teams worked hard to make the necessary checks and help clear the traffic lanes as quickly as possible,” said a spokesman for the Mont Blanc Tunnel operator GEIE-TMB. He added that no motorists had been harmed.
The Overflow of the Creusaz
Friday 8 Aug 2014, 8pm, closure of the access ramp to the tunnel on the French side of Mont Blanc. Disruption to traffic in both directions due to the overflow of the river "Torrent de la Creusaz" across the access ramp on the French side.
Drivers traveling from the Rhône-Alpes region to Italy had been advised to take the route via the Frejus tunnel instead.
