On 21 July 2020 at dawn, two Belgian mountaineers were moving on the north face of Mont Maudit (4,465 m or 14,649 ft), towards the Mont Blanc summit, when they unscrewed about thirty meters and jumped a serac in the fall.
The pair suffered some fractures, and one of them was severely injured in the back and was not able to move.
The PGHM of Chamonix could not intervene by air, because of bad weather conditions.
At 5.20 am, the gendarmes took the cable car from the Aiguille du Midi to the intermediate station of the Plan de l'Aiguille, to join the two mountaineers.
Finally, the helicopter was able to take off in the middle of the morning and was supported by an aircraft from the company Chamonix Mont-Blanc Hélicoptères, requested by the PGHM because of its greater power.
The two climbers were first taken down to the DZ des Bois drop-off area in Chamonix before being taken to Sallanches hospital.
The operation has mobilized two helicopters, ten rescuers from the PGHM of Chamonix and a doctor from the Hospitals of the Mont-Blanc region.
