Held in the Aiguilles Rouge mountain range, this years race is being prepared for this Saturday, April 11th. The association running the race, the Versent Sud, hopes to have the same great crowds as the 1st edition in 2007. Some 90 skiers will find themselves at the Brévent Flégère taking in some 1700m altitude gain and loss. The race starts with the competitors heading up the combe des Vioz in Brévent towards the col Cornu, then Lacs Noirs and col des Crochus…all the while with a fantastic view of the Mont Blanc chain. Weather permitting! The 2008 race was canceled due to bad weather. This race and itinerary were thought up by a few ski patrollers and rescue workers for the 50th anniversary of the Flégère lift. Since then, every Fall, the race preparation gets underway. First order of the race prep is to ask for authorization to traverse the Aiguille Rouges Nature Reserve. Many competitors have been "training" for the race by doing a small race (slight exaggeration) known as the Pierra Menta...Nuno Caetano, Nina Slitch, Sebastien Baud…Alberto Motta, president of Trailers of Courmayeur will also be taking part in the race. Fans and supporters can come to the Index, Trappe or Lachenal slopes and cheer on the competitors. Winners will receive chocolate trophies, a must for Easter!
