More than 500 mayors of European cities, including Chamonix, will be today at the European parliament in Strasbourg, to engage a commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by over 20% by 2020, higher than the target committed by EU so far. By signing this "Covenant of Mayors", they have committed to saving energy, increasing the share of renewable energy and educate their fellow citizens, according to a statement from the European Commission published yesterday. Some French towns are involved Brest, Metz, Caen, Chambéry and then Chamonix. In Germany, Munich is involved in the project. Italy and Spain are among the countries best represented. The UK however has only one city, Aberdeen in Scotland. Over half of the emissions of greenhouse gases are generated by and within cities. Some 80% of the population lives and works in urban areas, where consumption is over 80% of energy. Le Dauphiné
