British climber in fatal accident

A young English climber was killed on Thursday in a 400 meter fall down the north face of the Aiguille du Midi, while climbing the Frendo Spur. The English team set-off on Tuesday, and became stuck on the route at 3000m altitude on Wednesday night. They called for assistance, but due to poor weather the Chamonix PGHM were unable to reach the two climbers stranded on the north face. It wasn't until Thursday night that the mountain rescue helicopter could take off. The PGHM police successfully rescued one 19 year old alpinist, suffering from mild hypothermia. However, his 20 year old companion apparently became detached from his belay during the night and fell 400 metres to his death. The PGHM recovered his body the next morning. Radio Mont Blanc
