On Sunday 25 September 25 2022, at 8:18 am, a moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Chamonix Mont-Blanc valley.
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Network (Renass), the epicenter was about 4.5 km from the town, not far from the Swiss and Italian borders.
The Seismological Network of the Alps (Sismalp), for its part, reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 at a depth of 5 km. It was felt by residents of the region who reported it on social networks, but no serious damage was reported.

On the rescue side, the firefighters received calls from residents wanting to report the tremors but no intervention was carried out. An officer left in the morning on reconnaissance, he did not find any casualties or damage to the houses.
"There may be risks of aftershocks"
“There may be risks of aftershocks. If this is the case and residents discover cracks in their homes, they must dial 18, ”assures Captain Mouralis, head of the Chamonix rescue center.
Residents of the Les Praz district of Chamonix told us that the walls of their house had shaken and that a key had fallen out of the lock in which it was inserted.
On the side of Fayet, some were awakened from their late Sunday morning by the impact of the earthquake. Testimonies assure that the tremors could have been felt, on a lesser scale, as far as Scionziez.
