22 DECEMBER 2023 CHAMONIX VALLEY STATUS UPDATE: Some info ahead of the holidays
DOMAIN & LIFT STATUS
The openings continue tomorrow with:
the cable cars of the Aiguille du Midi
the Domaine de Balme (road reopened)
The Domaine des Houches
SNOW STATUS
Above 1800m the snow cover is good. Below 1800m it's patchy.
Last night, it snowed above 1700m with about 20 cm of fresh snow at 1800m with more snow at higher altitudes.
Unfortunately, there was some wind, so snow will have accumulated in certain areas, increasing the risk of avalanche. Remember to read the BERA which is there for that!).
VALLEY BLANCHE UPDATE
The ridge from the summit of the Aiguille du Midi is not equipped.
The Montenvers/Mer de glace access order has been amended today. Access via the downstream station of the old gondola lift (path + stairs) is again possible until the opening of the new gondola but is no longer maintained and requires the use of mountaineering equipment. Access via the new access ("ferrata") remains possible. Otherwise, you have to call Santa Claus and his sleigh :)
ELSEWHERE
There is not much snow in the Bérard valley, so you have to be a good skier.
The ice climbing season has made a tentative start in Argentiere on the left bank side of the Déferlante sector. In Cogne there is some activity, but the waterfalls have not had so much flow.
