In the autumn of 2024, the Mont-Blanc Tunnel is undergoing structural maintenance.
The Mont Blanc Tunnel will be closed to all traffic from Monday 2 September 2024 at 5 p.m. until Monday 16 December 2024 at 5 p.m.
This period is considered the least impactful period for tourism, particularly for light vehicles, the primary users of the tunnel (68% of traffic in 2023) and for the economy of the two regions either side of the tunnel.
The Mont Blanc tunnel is 60 years old.
It is the first of the large European tunnels to undertake extensive structural renovation work. Its is going to be a long process.
The autumn 2024 closure is for the engineers to run tests to figure out how best to renovate the whole tunnel.
Two sections of 300 metres each will be renovated using two different technologies.
In 2025, there will be another closure. Its the second phase of the test where the best of the 2024 renovation technologies will be applied to an additional 600m of tunnel.
The budget for the work in 2024 and 2025 is 50 million euros.
