20 year old sets new record for the North Face Ultra Trail in Chamonix - Chamonix news

Undoubtedly helped by his background growing up in a mountain refuge in the Pyrenees, Kilian Jornet finished the 166km trail including 9400m of ascent, a full hour ahead of Dawa Sherpa. No newcomer to long distance running, the Spaniard had already won the Pierra Menta and the Europe Skyrunning this year. In the women's race, English Elizabeth Hawker also had a faster time than last year despite the harder course. She finished in 25 hours, 19 minutes and forty one seconds, a time which placed her 14th overall. In the Courmayeur-Champex-Chamonix (CCC) race, Guillaume Lenormand pounded the 98km in 12 hours 26 minutes and 4 seconds. Scottish Lucy Colquoun took first in the women's race with a time of 14 hours 33 minutes and 37 seconds almost two hours ahead of her nearest competitor and placing her 13th overall. It would have been impossible to miss the excitement in Chamonix this weekend. Wednesday 59 3-person teams started the Petit Trotte à Leon (220km race). Friday morning, 2100 people started in Courmayeur for the half trail, the CCC race. Then, 2377 runners started in Chamonix Friday evening to test their endurance in the Ultra Trail one of the world's hardest races. It was a party atmosphere in the centre of Chamonix and the streets were crowded with supporters cheering on the runners all throughout the weekend. 53% of the runners made it to the finish line. Among them, the mayor of Chamonix, Eric Fournier, who completed the CCC course in 21 hours and 49 seconds placing him 400th in his category. There was some controversy over Kilian's win since he ran with a bum bag instead of a backpack. But after further investigation, it was determined that he did carry with him all the required items (water, food, and equipment).
