Ten minutes earlier, the Chamonix train, in the direction of Fayet, filled with school children, came across the mass. A few minutes after the accident, another train crossed its path and backtracked upon seeing the accident. A large mudslide around the Merlet area, from the secured avalanche couloir Chailloux, let loose around 8 a.m. yesterday morning provoking a chain reaction of rockslides. A 3 to 4 ton bolder cut through the protective net between Taconnaz and Les Houches and landed directly on the tracks. The tracks have been badly damaged in that area and will remain closed for a few days. Geological experts from Lyon will be coming to the site today to see how to prevent this in the future.
