CHAMONIX / SKI: The Grands Montets is closed...

Together with Tignes and Val Thorens, Chamonix was the last ski resort to be opened yesterday, at the Grands Montets, which culminates at 3300 meters altitude. They came from all over the Haute-Savoie, bordering departments and Geneva to enjoy the last moments of deep snow. A layer of a few centimeters of "fresh" snow that yesterday morning was much appreciated. The season ended rather well for the lifts in Chamonix, with a growth of 3% of turnover. This Sunday closing conditions were still generally good with about 3m of snow on the top of the Grands Montets. The young skiers of the club Thoiry, in Ain, have completed their final training before hanging up the skis. The number of skiers was correct in this last Sunday, in any case better than during the last 15 days, where the ski was very disturbed by the weather. Now, if you want to ski, you will have go very high, and do some ski off piste. The Vallée Blanche should still bring happiness to some skiers during the month of May, if the weather permits. But beware of the dangers of the mountain. Le Dauphiné
