Fatal Cardiac Arrest on Le Brevent, Chamonix

Evening of Saturday 23rd February 2013 a 36 year old male Estonian suffered a fatal heart attack.

That morning three skiers set off on an off-piste route, descending in a westerly direction from Les Aiguilles Rouge, towards Le Gorge Diosaz . Visibility was low and the skiers were not well equipped. By midday they found themselves in difficulty and contacted the Chamonix PGHM by mobile phone.

A helicopter evacuation was not viable due to the low visibility. The skiers were directed to return to the Brevent. The PGHM dispatched two separate rescue teams from the top cable car station of Le Brevent to meet the three skiers.

A climb back to the summit of the Brevent was slow and hard but the rendez-vous was successful.  At 20:30 hrs, one skier suffered a cardiac arrest close to the summit of Le Brevent. Immediate aid was provided by the rescue team doctor and the patient was transferred to Chamonix hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
