PGHM fatality during training exercise near Chamonix

A member of the Chamonix PGHM (Olivier Deprez) was fatally injured Wednesday 25 April 2013, during a training session on the Aiguille d'Argentiere, in the Mont-Blanc range.

The accident took place above the Argentiere hut around 3.30pm. The 35 year old Gendarme was abseiling when he was fatally wounded in a rock fall.

He had joined the police in 2002 and became  member of the Chamonix PGHM September 1st, 2007.

A military funeral will be held in Chamonix tribute to him this weekend or on Monday.

The PGHM, established in 1958, is an elite unit specializing in mountain rescue. They make several hundred rescues each year, predominantly on the Mont-Blanc Massif.
