Saturday, 7 Sep 2013, around 8:30am, the PGHM Chamonix responded to a call for assistance in Couloir du Goûter on the route to the Summit of Mont-Blanc. A 80 year old Brazilian male climber was reported to have fallen in Couloir du Goûter.
The Grand Couloir is located on a popular route to the summit of Mont Blanc between the Tête-Rousse Refuge (3167 m) and the Goûter Refuge (3817 m). Climbers have to cross the couloir and although it is not very wide, it is very dangerous due to avalanche in winter and particulary, due to rock fall, in the summer season. Many climbers call it the "death couloir".
The victim was climbing with his son. They were not roped together and suddenly he fell, according to AFP, 250 metres. The victim's son alerted the PGHM Chamonix and they recovered the body to Chamonix. The son is safe and physically unharmed.
