Friday 20 September 2013, for the sixth year running, the initiative to clean the Mer de Glace glacier, brings together the Lafuma Group and the French Alpine Club of Chamonix.
The largest glacier in France, Mer de Glace is visited annually by more than 500 000 tourists. A clean-up day becomes more than necessary. Fortunately, this initiative is a growing success among the locals.
Each year more and more waste is left everywhere by irresponsible tourists, skiers and climbers. Now it is time to clear up that trash!
In 2012, three tons of waste was collected by almost one hundred volunteers. This year, the volunteers will be supervised by High Mountain Guides from Chamonix. Lafuma Group employees are paid by their company, as a normal work day. Other associations, such as the "World Wildlife Fund", "En passant par la Montagne", "Mountain Riders", "Sport dans la Ville" and the UCPA are also involved.
This year, more than one hundred volunteers will roll up their sleeves, strap on their crampons and collect the garbage that others leave behind.
The Mer de Glace must be protected: the largest glacier in the French Alps cannot be buried under trash! The Mer de Glace is not a waste dump and should not become one!
7kms long and 200m deep, Mer de Glace is the largest glacier in France. In the winter, thousands of skiers travel down the glacier to the Montenvers Railway station after skiing the famous "Vallee Blanche". To access the Mer de Glace from Chamonix one should take the furnuicular train up to Montenvers. The Montenvers Rail Station is located upstream of the 'snout' of the glacier and offers an excellent view of Mer de Glace.
Come and lend a hand!
