Former British sprinter, Dwain Anthony Chambers, now faces the ultimate summit of his life: the summit of Mont-Blanc.
It is imperious to mention that the ascent is done to the profit of Broxbourne-based Teens Unite Fighting Cancer. Dwain, who is a patron of the Broxbourne-based charity, arrived in France Monday (23 Sept 2013). Firstly he has to have at least a short period of acclimatisation before climbing the Mont-Blanc. His journey begins on Thursday (26 Sept 2013).
Many may think that this ascent is a simple task for a trained athlete such as Dwain, but this general belief is more than false. Climbing Mont-Blanc is not a simple walk in the park and should never be underestimated – the peak is at a massive of 4810m and is the highest in Europe. Both the ascent and the descent are dangerous and challenging.
Dwain has a total of seven days to complete the challenge, including a day for the acclimatisation training. The ascent makes Dwain to get out of his comfort zone and to do unusual things for him, things such as sleeping in huts on the way up to the peak, wear snowshoes and crampons, climb mountains, face the temperatures, and more than all, pay attention to the tinniest details.
“Apparently Dwain is a mix of nerves and excitement. It’s a massive challenge and the fact that he’s fit doesn’t necessarily mean that he’ll be fine. A lot of people struggle with altitude sickness and however fit you are doesn’t matter." said Ellie Pendred, from of Teens Unite.
We can only say: Good job, Dwain!
