Welcome to 1865 and the Golden Age of Mountaineering

From late June to late October 2015, the Chamonix Valley will offer visitors a variety of events to celebrate the 150th anniversary of 1865. You will have the possibility to view the glaciers as never seen before and discover a rich program of exhibitions, events, films, books and excursions all summer long.

150th anniversary of the Golden Age of Alpinism

The golden age of alpine conquest relates to the period 1854 – 1865 when the vast majority of the major summits in the Alps were first climbed. Mountaineering, pioneered by the Victorians, develops as a « sport » with no scientific justification.

1865 is considered an outstanding and unforgettable year. We count 65 first ascents across the Alps and 7 others in the Mont-Blanc Massif including the Aiguille Verte, the Grandes Jorasses and the remarkable Brenva Spur on Mont-Blanc, but also a very sad year, considering the terrible accident on the Matterhorn on 14th July, where 3 English climbers and the Chamonix guide, Michel Croz, lost their lives, brought a tragic end to a glorious and somewhat carefree campaign.

This summer, the Chamonix Valley will pay tribute to both guides and alpinists of the Golden Age: their remarkable feats of bravery, endurance and audacity; their exaltation of the mountains and lifelong friendships.

A full programme of exhibition, excursions and ascents, some exceptional collections of mountain art, photography and literature are waiting for you. If you want to read more and find out the full schedule, then take a look here
