A festival of climbing in Chamonix from 10th to 12th July with over 20.000 spectators anticipated. The alpine sports capital promises us a fierce competition and a world-class climbing!
The Events
For more than 15 years, Chamonix hosts climbers from all over the world. The three amazing days of festival with three competitions, the Paraclimbing Cup and the IFSC Climbing World Cup which incorporates the European Championships.
In Chamonix, the IFSC Climbing World Cup is a Lead and Speed event for men and women. There is no Bouldering event and there is no Youth competition.
The Europeean Championships are included in the World Cup, so that registered European climbers are awarded points towards their European ranking. As there are only two European Championship events this year, and Chamonix is the second, following Innsbruck, the Championship will be decided.
The IFSC Paraclimbing Cup, is a Lead only event for men and women with three categories of blind, one amputee and neurological.
The Competitiors
The IFSC Climbing World Cup Lead women's category, Jain Kim will be defending her top spot against a strong field of competitors, including Delaney Miller (USA) and Ana Verhoeven (BEL).
The men’s competition might be more intense, with 2014 Lead and Bouldering Word Champion Adam Ondra (CZE), favourites Sean McColl (CAN), Ramón Julian Puigblanque (ESP), and local hero Romain Desgranges (FRA) all competing in Chamonix.
In women's Speed, Anouck Jaubert (FRA) from Saint-Étienne is reknown for her spectacular displays of speed and coordination. Chamonix is one of Anouck's two home events on the Climbing World Cup. The French audience will be giving her a lot of support.
In the men’s Speed, it seems like Qixin Zhong (CHN) is unbeatable this season, after his three gold medals in a row. Yet, Libor Hroza (CZE) was only 0.01s away from breaking the current World Record in Chongqing, China, so the pressure is on!
The 22-year-old Czech climber, Adam Ondra, has been also elected the "Athlete of the year 2014". He will be awarded on Saturday at the 2015 Climbing World Cup with a trophy, which recognizes Adam's remarkable achievement.
An another great name expected at the 2015 Climbing World Cup is Romain Desgranges. The local star is always welcomed back to the Chamonix Valley. The multiple champion of France and 4th best climber in the world returns from a trip to California, with a win at the High Bowls of Joshua Tree.
