On Wednesday, 19 August 2015, a Spanish alpiniste, 38, has died, while attempting the col du Midi (3532m of altitude), next to the Cosmiques Refuge.
According to a first hypothesis, a malaise gripped the man during the night. Despite the several attempts of PGHM team to intervene, the bad weather made their mission impossible. The man suffered all night long waiting for help.
On the early hours of Wednesday morning, a team of guides from Cosmiques Refuge arrived at the place where the man was bivouacking during the night with his partner, trying to resuscitate him. Every effort was made to save the victim, but sadly it was unsuccessful, the men didn't survive.
An investigation is under way into the possible cause of the tragedy.
