German national suffers a fatal fall on the Aiguille Verte.
According to the Chamonix PGHM, the accident occurred at 11:00am on Sunday 10 April 2016, while the man was descending from the summit of the Aiguille Verte, 4122 meters above Chamonix. He made a technical error with a fixation, and consequently fell 600 or 700 meters. His climbing partners on this Mont Blanc massif peak were all experienced climbers who alerted the PGHM.
Another fatal accident had taken place a little earlier on the same day, at around 10:20am near Grand Bornand, close to La Clusaz. The victim, a skier who attempted traverse the Creuse valley, located at 1800 meters altitude in the Aravis range. He jumped from a rocky spur several metres above the snow pack and landed badly. His colleagues quickly raised the alarm. A helicopter from the Security Civil of Annecy arrived very quickly at the scene, but the 23-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two investigations have been opened to shed light on the exact circumstances of these accidents.
