Skier Falls Into Crevice in Mont Blanc Massif

Thursday 26th April 2018, in the late afternoon a skier was taken care by the Chamonix PGHM rescuers after falling in a crevice during the Mont Blanc ascent.

According to Le Dauphine, the accident occurred at La Jonction, in the Mont-Blanc massif (4808.73m), near the Grands Mulets Hut (3051m) located on a rocky island surrounded by ice.

The Chamonix PGHM was dispatched on the spot by the helicopter of the civil security, but unharmed, the victim was left on the spot.

Access to Grands Mulets Hut

From Chamonix take the Aiguille du Midi cable car to the Plan de l’Aiguille mid station (2,317m). Had south towards the Aiguille du Midi north face and then traverse further (beware of serac fall from the upper Glacier Rond). After meeting the Junction with the west face descent routes, drop down onto the Flat section of the Glacier des Bossons and head across it to the slopes underneath the Dome Du Gouter (sometimes with difficulty on the last section due to crevasses). The Grands Mulets Hut is on the ridge to the left.

WARNING: you are on a glacier. Take the safety gear.

Take great care, hire a High Mountain Guide who knows the area and has plenty of experience. Also keep the PGHM number always ready and close to you, to stay safe in the mountains!
