Grandes Jorasses: A man falls to his death

Monday, 20th August 2018 around noon, an Italian mountaineer fell 600 meters and died in Grandes Jorasses, Mont-Blanc.

According to France 3, he was 36 years old and of Italian nationality from the Dolomites (Bolzano).

He was climbing alone on a very famous and difficult area in Pointe Walker, on the north face of the Grandes Jorasses (4.208 meters).

The route is reserved only for the most experienced mountain climbers.

According to the High Mountain Rescue Team of Chamonix (PGHM), the alert was given by two mountaineers who moved in the same direction as him and witnessed the accident.

The rescue team sent a civil security helicopter in order to find him, but they could only notify his death.

The body of the mountaineer was found nearly 600 meters below, at the foot of the relief.

"The causes of the fall is unknown at the moment", added the rescue team.

An investigation has been opened by the PGHM to clear the situation.
