Chamonix: When does the ski season 2019/20 open?

Chamonix is world-renowned for its vast & diverse ski domains, where one can ski or practice many other winter sports.

As November has just begun, many snow sports enthusiasts are looking forward to the ski season 2019/20 in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc.

If the weather is favourable, some areas might open mid-November, however, most ski domains in Chamonix plan to open mid-December.

Grands Montets

If the snow is good, the Grands Montets ski area will open partially on November 16th, writes Le Dauphine.

"We do not fool ourselves", said Mathieu Dechavanne, CEO of the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc, which operates most of the ski lifts at the top of the Mont-Blanc valley, as well as the area of Megève. It must be said that "it takes snow to open safely, given the pile of stones", continues Mathieu Dechavanne.

The Argentière -Lognan et Lognan-Les Grands Montets cable cars remain closed, as a result of the fire at the Lognan cable car mid-station, which took place on 11 September 2018.

However, the Grands Montets ski area was open last winter and will be open this winter season, via the recent Plan Joran lift.

The Grands Montets ski area can be accessed via the Plan Joran cable car.

At La Flégère, there are continuous works taking place and the project in on schedule.

As a reminder, in April 2019, the old Flégère cable cars were decommissioned and the construction works to replace them with modern gondolas commenced.

"We are in the timings, the workers are sleeping on the spot and are working hard as they announce snow this weekend", comments the CEO.

The Weather

When asked about the "snow and avalanche" information, Serge Taboulot, head of the Météo France centre in the northern Alps, declared: "The first bulletins will be published on our website and smartphone app from October 31st. Until December 12th, the risk of an avalanche will not be quantified, but we will give the indications collected on the snowpack, its stability and the snowfall. As of December 12, we will enter the high season, with a risk of avalanche encrypted. The Avalanche Risk Assessment Bulletin will be updated until the end of April, based on the work of our three groups of snow scientists based in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Chamonix and Grenoble and our network in the stations."
