Today is the Transhumance Festival in Argentière

The small village of Argentière, at the top of the Chamonix valley, is hosting with joy again this year, this Friday, the Transhumance Festival. No less than 800 goats will leave for their new pasture.

On Friday 16 July 2021, the municipality of Chamonix organizes in support with the Alpine Economy Society (SEA) of Haute-Savoie and the usual partners, this bucolic event.

A herd of 800 goats and sheep will leave the village of Le Tour at 10 a.m. to head to Argentière to celebrate the beginning of life in the alpine pasture. At 3:30 p.m., the herd will move away from this more urban and populated climate to the Lognan and La Pendant alpine pastures.

Its presence in the center of Argentière will undoubtedly set a country atmosphere at Place de la Maison du Village.

A market to discover local artisans

To satisfy the curious ones, a transhumance market will be held all day, it is a unique opportunity to meet artisans: cutlery, wood workshop, comic book artist, etc. The shepherd will also be present to discuss his passion. And the food lovers will be able to taste local products, as well as discover or rediscover alpine music with Pascal Popelier. This approach to rural and mountain life is a summer event for tourists, inhabitants of the valley and alpine festival goers.

It’s a boon for children and adults alike to learn more about the life of the shepherd and his flock, for example by understanding how animals help maintain the ski area and promote biodiversity. An undeniable discovery of the reconquest of the useful and beneficial pasture for the planet.
