4807,81 m: Mont Blanc's new height!

Wednesday 29 September 2021 the surveyors unveiled the new official measure of Mont Blanc.

The highest mountain in the Alps and the highest in Europe is 4807,81 metres tall.

During the week-end 18-19 September 2021, a measurement campaign took place to determine the exact altitude of the highest peak in Western Europe.

Discover through the photos this operation of measurements.

We remind you that a record year was the 2007, when the summit of Mont Blnac reached 4 810.90 meters.

A measurement campaign every two years

A measurement campaign repeated every two years by a team of surveyors, which provides an accurate database for many scientists. Among other things, they will make it possible to model the Mont Blanc ice cap and thus to know its volume of ice.

A constantly changing height

The altitude of the Mont Blanc varies continuously due to the intensity of the winds, the precipitations and the footsteps of the mountaineers. It can either grow or shrink.

Next measurement campaign will be launched in 2023, when a new altitude for the Mont Blanc is to be announced.
