The 90 km of Mont-Blanc canceled due to weather conditions

On the night of Thursday 23 June to Friday 24 June 2022, at 4 a.m., the start of the 90 km du Mont-Blanc was to be given in Chamonix, but, in the evening, the safety commission decided to cancel the event due to bad weather conditions.

For the moment, the maintenance of the other races scheduled for the weekend, including the Mont-Blanc Marathon on Sunday, which counts for the Golden Trail Series circuit, is not called into question.

The official communication of the Mont-Blanc Marathon

Following today’s final safety commission at 7:00 p.m. and taking into account the orange-level storm vigilance alert given by the prefecture, we regret to announce that the 90km du Mont-Blanc 2022 is cancelled.

All the weather models are unanimous, including that of the race meteorologist. The situation announced in the Haute-Savoie department and more particularly in the Chamonix Mont-Blanc Valley from Friday June 24 at midday indicates:

  • Heavy and continuous rain
  • Wind gusts of 80 to 100km/h at all altitudes
  • Major storm disturbances (hail, thunder, lightning)
  • Temperature dropping to 5°C at 2000m

In light of this information, the safety commission, in agreement with the organising committee, has taken this decision in order to preserve the physical integrity of the runners, their companions and all the members of the organisation (volunteers, first aiders, service providers…).

All options for maintaining the race have been considered, including that of a possible postponement. Unfortunately, due to the density of this weekend’s events, the unavailability of the organisation teams leaves us no option but to cancel the event.

The organising committee is now working to improve the “cancellation in the event of force majeure” conditions provided for by the race regulations (registration priority, reimbursement percentage). This information will be communicated to you as soon as possible.

With regard to the Vertical Kilometer, the safety commission will meet again tomorrow morning to decide on whether to maintain the race or to postpone it until Saturday morning.
