Saturday 25 Jan 2014, at around 5am, the Chanel boutique, situated in the centre of Chamonix, was burgled. The total value of the goods stolen (jewellery, clothing, and accessories) is estimated at more than 100 000 euros.
This was no typical smash and grab. A sledgehammer was put through the window, providing access to luxury goods totalling well in excess of €100,000, all stashed in large swagbags.
In, out and on the chopper in less than 6 minutes! This team was well funded, with a carefully planned attack on a high value, soft target; they certainly knew what they were doing and left very little to chance!
The investigation, by the Gendarmerie of Chamonix, is ongoing. Assistance is being provided by the specialist division of the Brigade de Recherches. The police are calling for witnesses - the noise of a sledgehammer breaking re-enforced glass at night in central Chamonix, is unlikely to have escaped attention.
