The truck transporting tomatoes succeeded in climbing the long uphill up the Ergatz viaducte but started smoking once in the Chatelard tunnel. The driver and his wife got out of their vehicle and exited the tunnel on foot just before the truck went up in flames. Emergency systems were automatically activated, lowering the security barriers and alerting the fire and police departments, who were able to ascertain everyone's safety. Nobody was injured, although there was lots of material damage to the tunnel infrastructure and electrical equipment. The tunnel will remain closed for at least weeks. In the meantime the one-way road descending the valley between Servoz and Sallanches will be used as a two-way road. There is also another detour for cars on the narrow Servoz road.
