New threat from the Tête Rousse glacier?

Last season, an enourmous pocket of water was drained from underneath the Tête Rousse glacier. Unsurprisingly, the pocket of water has started to fill up again: around 4000 m3 are thought to have accumulated in just a few months already. New studies have begun by the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) to try to find out where the water is coming from, the speed at which the cavity is filling, and above all, what the risk of collapse is. The amount of these additional studies is estimated at around 500,000 euros. These studies should be completed by autumn and a report will be made before the end of the year (and with a bit of luck, before the thing explodes). Exploratory drilling will take place on the 29-30th June, and a barrier system will be put in place by the end of the month to prevent climbers going into areas liable to collapse. Radio Mont Blanc
