More pedestrianised streets in Chamonix by 2020

What will traffic and parking in Chamonix town centre be like in the year 2020? The City Council have been studying Chamonix's ability to manage increasing traffic. After a year of study and investigation, they have concluded that there will be even more cars than at the moment, and that around 1400 (metered) parking places need to be created. To help achieve this, the plan includes a make-over of the Grepon parking area (the parking area as you come into town on the dual-carriageway), including shuttle buses into town. But there will not be the 1800 places as originally envisaged, only 1,000 places. The Chamonix municipality is clearly planning to reduce both traffic and free parking in the town, to further develop pedestrian zones and also so called "soft-traffic" areas. A more precise draft proposal should be published before the end of the year. This is in preparation for the 2012 budget vote, and will include details of the initial projects that are part of the overall plan.
