Friday, 30 May 2014, the Tourist Office of Chamonix tests a brand new Augmented Reality Tablet, specially designed for tourist visitors.
Discovering the history of the Chamonix Valley has never been so easy. All you have to do is to purchase the “Itinerio”, a tablet made especially for the Chamonix Valley, provided by the Chamonix Tourist Office.
Itenerio is an electronic device provided with the new Itinerio application installed. The application facilitates the exploration of different sites, via interactive and original geo-guided tours of the Chamonix Valley!
As the project's directors stated for the press, this tablet, together with the application, have been "created to display, in the most effective way, diverse content such as videos, 3Ds images and augmented reality features.”
The app alone, can be downloaded for smartphone or tablet. The internet connection can fail at any moment and, as a tourist, the costs of internet is quite substantial, so tourists are advised to think about renting the tablet from the Tourist Office.
For the moment, "Itinério" covers seven main routes (5 walking routes and 2 train lines):
- 5 walking routes: departure from different villages of the Chamonix Valley: Servoz, Les Houches, Chamonix, Balme / Le Tour and Vallorcine;
- 2 train routes via the Mont Blanc Express;
Several points of interest (POI) are located on all these seven routes, and in a multitude of other locations. The app features a total of 110 POI.
On each of the 110 POI, visitors receive all the information needed, pictures, sounds, videos. There is even a feature that allows discovering a site in different historical periods.
The app also features 3 exhibition venues:
- Maison de l'Alpage (Servoz),
- Musée montagnard (Les Houches);
- Maison de village (Argentière).
If the project is a success, the number of POI will increase.
