Chamonix in solidarity with Nepal!

Monday, April 27, 2015. Following the catastrophic 7,8 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Nepal on Saturday, April 25, a group of guides and climbers from Chamonix valley will join forces to provide assistance to victims.

This is not the first time when Chamonix stands ready for Nepal. Only this time, there are no avalanches or mountain enthusiasts looking for some dangerous adventures. Right now, we are talking about a real tragedy where more than 3,000 people were killed, while thousands more were injured and rendered homeless.

We remind you that the disaster struck Nepal in full tourist season. Many foreigners that were in trekking or climbing trips lost their life or are still missing.

Chamonix proves its solidarity! The first group of 6 persons was already sent in Nepal to help in finding buried victims, and more other volunteers will join them on the following days.

"According to our contacts in Kathmandu, financial support is urgent.. to help pay for emergency facilities such as helicopters, care and to allow rescue vehicles faster access to isolated areas. Due to our extremely strong links with this mountain community, an emergency aid fund of 20,000 euros will be sent from the commune", declared the mayor of Chamonix, Eric Fournier.

Tonight at 6pm, a meeting on this subject will be held in the Chamonix town hall with local associations and concerned citizens, where they will decide the form of this aid.

More, a donation box is now in place in the Chamonix mairie for those wishing to make an additional contribution.
