Rognons Glacier: fatal fall for a skier

Thursday morning 20th April 2017, a French man (71), suffered a fatal accident in the area of the Rognons Glacier, located between the Aiguille des Grands Montets (3297 m) and the Argentière Glacier (2168 m).

From what we understand from Le Dauphine, while descending the Rognons Glacier with a group of friends, the 71-year-old victim appears to have skied into the hard ice wall of a serac and the impact has been fatal.

The Chamonix PGHM arrived quickly by helicopter at the site of the accident. Sadly, the victim was declared dead at the scene.

An investigation has been opened by the Chamonix PGHM to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.

In the north-east area of the Rognons Glacier, the skiing is technically difficult with crevasse and avalanche danger. Many of the routes, especially on the right (far) side, have a serious serac-fall, off the Aiguille Verte.
