British Skier in fatal crevasse fall on the Grands Montets, Chamonix

Wednesday 27 March 2013 at 14:15, a skier, taking an off-piste route on the Grands Montets, discovered another skier at the bottom of a shallow crevasse.

The PGHM was alerted and within minutes the Chamonix PGHM helicopter was airborne, taking two rescuers to the scene of the accident close the the foot o the Chevallier Couloir.

On their arrival minutes later, the victim of the accident, a 38 year old British man, was pronounced dead.

It is thought that the victim had attempted to cross a snow bridge over a crevasse at high speed. Mostly likely, this was an intentional decision. When the bridge collapsed under the skier's own weight, momentum propelled him into the far lip of the crevasse with such force that he either lost consciousness or died from the impact, and fell to the bottom of the cravasse.
