Young skier dies in avalanche on the Possettes above the Chamonix Valley

Yesterday, Saturday 10 January 2024 at 1:30 p.m., the Chamonix High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM) was alerted following an avalanche that occurred in the Posettes, at Le Tour, overlooking the Chamonix valley.

Two young men on skis were buried by the snow, one of them lost his life, the other was transported, slightly injured, to the hospital center of Sallanches. Two other people were found unharmed.

The young victim is believed to be from the valley. Significant rescue resources were deployed, four gendarmes from the PGHM, including a dog handler, three canine teams from the Brévent-Flégère resort, five ski patrollers from the Tour resort, a doctor and two helicopters, one from the gendarmerie and one from the Chamonix Mont-Blanc Helicopters company.

An investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy has been opened by the prosecutor in  Bonneville. In a press release, the prefecture of Haute-Savoie reminds us that yesterday, the avalanche risk was 3/5 and that it is the same this Sunday, January 21, on all of the Chablais, Aravis and Mont-Blanc massifs.
