Pollution Caused by the Mont Blanc Tunnel

Each year the traffic crossing the Tunnel du Mont Blanc creates 14% of the pollution produced at the foot of this famous mountain range. A study in 2008 found that the yearly average of pollution-emitted from the tunnel is 14%.

The study was sponsored by the ATMB (autoroutes et tunnel du Mont-blanc) and the conclusion was presented yesterday. These results have been evaluated and compared to other sources of pollution in the valley. The largest polluter, at 44%, would be local companies and artisans. Second place, at 22%, would be private heating, notably, wood burning chimneys.

To reduce tunnel emissions, the ATMB has decided to put in place a system to filter the pollution produced by the tunnel traffic. According to Director General of the ATMB, Jean-Paul Chaumont, the new system will eliminate 90% of pollution emitted by the tunnel. The new system is planned to be in place by the end of 2010 and will cost between 2 & 5 M€.
