Deadly fall for a climber in Chamonix

A young man of 31 years, French origin but resident in Switzerland, died yesterday in a mountain route close to Nantillons glacier in the Chamonix valley. The climber fell 200 meters and died instantly. The accident occurred on the descent, at the Rognon des Nantillons. It was his climbing partner, an Argentinian of 32 years, who warned the PGHM Chamonix at 17h05. He said he heard his friend scream, while he was checking the guidebook/topo, but he could not inform the PGHM about the circumstances of the accident. The two climbers were not roped together, they were abseiling at that precise moment. It was at this point that the accident occurred. Rescuers intervened immediately. The helicopter rescued the body of the dead climber and his friend. The rescue lasted at least two hours in an area that is known for its exposure to rock fall. The PGHM will return to the place of the accident to determine if it was a problem with the belay used by climbers. The family of the young climber has been warned in the evening. Le Dauphiné
