Friday, 19 Sept 2014, the eco-citizen event "Clearing up the Mer de Glace" has proven to be a great success!
Four tonnes of rubbish collected from the Mer de Glace glacier!
The annual clean-up of the Mer de Glace is a true success. During the last 7 years, over 18 tonnes of rubbish were collected from the glacier.
For the seventh consecutive year the Club Alpin Français, mairie de Chamonix Mont-Blanc, Compagnie du Mont-Blanc, UCPA and Lafuma Group worked together to clean up the largest glacier in France.
A surface area of forty square kilometers was cleaned by more than one hundred volunteers supervised by the UCPA's Chamonix guides.
Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) glacier, located on the north face of Mont-Blanc, is annually visited by more than 500 000 tourists, therefore a fall clean up was badly needed.
Armed with experience and patience, the 2014 volunteers collected tonnes of metal rubbish , glass, plastic and wood.
Well done!
