Chamonix joins global climate strike

On Friday, the 20th of September 2019, the Global Climate Strike takes place.

According to LeDauphine, young people and adults from all over the world have planned to meet to demonstrate against the inaction of governments in the face of climate change.

Why Climate Strike?

Climate change is already affecting Chamonix and Mont-Blanc. Among its effects, it is worth mentioning the rapid shrinking of the Mer de Glace glacier and the many rock collapses which have been happening in recent years. Indeed, the Alps are heavily impacted by global warming, as is the whole world.

Greta Thunberg, a Swedish school student, missed class and stood in front of the Swedish parliament building with her hand-painted "Skolstrejk för klimatet" sign (translation: school strike for climate), every Friday leading up to the 2018 Swedish election.

It was not the first time that children skipped classes to demand change. However, Greta's one-person strike managed to lead to global movements.

Greta became the face of the movement and a source of inspiration to thousands of students and adults all over the world.

In March 2019, students from over 2,000 cities worldwide participated in the strike. According to TheGuardian.com, 1.5 million people took part in the strike organized in March. Smaller strikes occurred in May, June and August (cnet.com).
