Aiguille du Midi: Strong Winds at 185 km/h

On 20th October 2019, the wind blew hard at the Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m or 12,605 ft).

According to the Réseau d'Observation Météo du Massif Alpin, which gathers data from many volunteer observers, the gusts reached 185 km / h, due to foehn effect, which causes warming and drying of air on the lee side of cross mountain wind.

It is not that uncommon to experience such powerful gusts at the Aiguille du Midi. In 2018, during the Eleanor storm, which caused considerable damage to the Panoramic Mont-Blanc cable car, winds blew with 250 km/h. However, winds usually blow calmer on Aiguille du Midi.

The anemometer of Mont d'Arbois, above Megève, recorded gusts at 107 km/h.
