On 23 June 2020, at 5.10 am, shortly before the Mont-Blanc tunnel was scheduled for reopening after a night of maintenance work, a traffic accident took place.
Due to a safety drill and maintenance works, traffic in the Mont-Blanc tunnel was totally stopped on the night of 22 to 23 June 2020, from 7 pm to 6 am.
Shortly before the tunnel resumed normal traffic, an accident took place, which led to the extension of the tunnel closure.
The accident occurred inside the tunnel, near shelter 05, about 1.8 km (1.12 mi) from the French exit.
It was caused by the impact of a light vehicle from Italy, owned by the GEIE-TMB, the operator of the structure, against the wall of the emergency stop location. The vehicle was driven by an employee of the GEIE-TMB.
The internal security services of the tunnel intervened quickly with vehicles equipped for fire fighting. Finally, no fire or smoke was observed.
The driver was taken care of by the public health services and was transported, as a precaution, to the Sallanches hospital.
No other vehicle was directly involved in the accident. Following the findings of the binational police service and the evacuation of the accident vehicle, traffic was restored at 6.35 am.
