Mont-Blanc: a climber dies at Mer de Glace

On Monday 27 September 2021, at midday, a fatal rare accident occurred at the Mer de Glace ("Sea of Ice") , in the Mont-Blanc massif.

A 32-year-old climber died following a boulder slide of a moraine in the Mer de Glace sector.

He was part of a group of two mountaineers climbing the glacial tongue and walking through the moraine boulders to reach Les Echelles des Egralets (2230 m) with the idea of climbing up to the Chapeau Hut. But in this area, made of more or less stable rocks in a succession of small mounds, a boulder slide occurred and unfortunately hit one of the two climbers.

The young man found himself caught under a massive rock.

Alerted by his rope companion, the PGHM (Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne) of Chamonix could do nothing to save the climber.

The victim, originally from the Haute-Savoie department, was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.
