On Saturday, the 27th of July 2019, the municipality of Chamonix inaugurated two new covered clay tennis courts.
The tennis courts in Chamonix are of great quality, which led to the valley receiving the Roland-Garros club label in 2018, in the exceptional sports facility category.
With two very well equipped tennis and squash centres in the Chamonix valley - the Richard Bozon Center in Chamonix town and the Tennis des Iles in Argentiere, the valley has received the Roland-Garros distinction in 2018.
Moreover, the construction works for two new covered clay tennis courts began in early 2018 and, after more than a year of diligent works, the new tennis courts were inaugurated on Saturday, the 27th of July 2019.
The inauguration of the two new clay courts was a very joyful occasion, attended by many elected officials. "The covered clay courts are very rare", says François-Régis Bouquin, director of the cabinet of the municipality of Chamonix. "It is very qualitative equipment", he continues.
Besides being renowned as the world's capital of skiing and mountaineering, Chamonix also has high-end tennis facilities. "As odd as it may seem, there is a tennis culture in Chamonix, although this sport does not seem to be in the local DNA right from the start," says Marie-Noëlle Fleury, assistant sports coordinator.
Besides having received the Roland-Garros club label, the Chamonix tennis club has also recently celebrated 80 years since its creation in 1938, with an exhibition that can be found on the promenade du Fori.
Indeed, the Chamonix tennis courts are highly regarded. "Having courts at 1,000 meters is not trivial", says the sports elected.
The two new clay tennis courts are covered by a wooden roof, which makes it possible to overcome the weather hazards.
