COVID-19: Italy Closed, but the Mont-Blanc Tunnel remains open

Since 9 March 2020, over 60 million people in Italy have been placed under lockdown, as an emergency measure to stop the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.

Also from 9 March 2020, the Italian regional government decided to close all ski area facilities & ski lifts in the Aosta Valley.

However, the Mont-Blanc tunnel, which connects the Chamonix Valley (France) to the Aosta Valley (Italy), remains open.

All ski facilities and ski lifts of the Aosta Valley are closed as of 9 March 2020, in an attempt to limit the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19, which has heavily affected whole Italy.

However, 12 km from Italy, on the other side of the Mont-Blanc tunnel, life goes on as usual.

During their press-release on 8 March 2020, the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc has announced that all their ski areas & lifts remain open.

Moreover, vehicles keep coming in from Italy, as the Mont-Blanc tunnel remains open.

"The prefecture has not informed us of any new measures to take regarding the Mont-Blanc tunnel", declared the company Autoroutes et tunnel du Mont-Blanc (ATMB), which manages the Mont-Blanc tunnel.

In the meantime, the flow of vehicles is falling by itself, with a 57% drop in light vehicle traffic, 44 % for buses and 8% for heavy-goods vehicle.

However, these numbers should be taken with a pinch of salt, as the traffic on the Mont-Blanc tunnel was interrupted one day last week due to the snowfall on the Italian side.
