The New Périades Bivouac is Ready

Built in 1925 and renovated in 1966, the bivouac which could accommodate three people was a victim to global warming in August 2019.

After its collapse, a call for donations was launched to build a new bivouac.

Now, the new Périades Bivouac is ready and it will be helicoptered on 20 August 2020.

Located at the impressive altitude of 3421 m (11223 ft), the little cabin has a rich history.

However, in August 2019 the mountains crumbled and the hut collapsed, because of global warming.

Having suffered from its foundation, building a new bivouac was the right choice.

306 people donated 14,230 €

Back in August 2019, almost everyone mobilized themselves to help recover the Périades bivouac: the town hall of Chamonix, the FFCAM, the Chamonix Mont-Blanc helicopters, the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix, Ludovic Ravanel (researcher at CNRS) and many mountain guides.

Thus, a call for donations was launched to allow partial financing of helicopter rotations, the renovation of the cabin and the strengthening of the platform via equipment that will secure the cabin.

The objective was to collect 800 euros (712 £), but, amazingly, people from all over France donated a total sum of 14,230 euros (12,678 £).

The budget of 14,230 € was not fully spent

Thus for next summer, another bivouac will be rehabilitated, that of the Tour Rouge at Grépon. Completely unusable, this cabin is located 1h30m walking distance above the refuge of l'Envers des Aiguilles.

The new Périades bivouac is a little smaller

The old one could accommodate 3 people. The new one will only accommodate 2 mountaineers but will be better isolated.

Jean Sébastien Knoertzer explains “We have a ledge which is much narrower. We can't use the old location anymore because it's collapsing, so we moved it 20 meters. It is a ledge which is much smaller. We made the cabin according to the size of the ledge".

The new bivouac will be helicoptered by Pascal Brun on 20 July.

The two bivouacs (the old and the new) were presented on Place du Mont Blanc in Chamonix on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, during a nice meeting that brought together all of the project partners.

The old bivouac was exposed at the Majestic and will soon be installed at the Alpine Museum.
