Chamonix Film Festival

On June 13, 2023, the Chamonix film festival will begin its third edition. To give you a taste, here are the main lines of its new program.

As all good things come in threes, Morgane and Christophe Raylat, driven by the success of the first two editions of the Chamonix Film Festival, have redoubled their efforts to ensure that their cultural rendez-vous returns for the third time this summer with a program still breathing so much the altitude. From June 13 until June 18 the fifteen films selected, nine of which are previews or first festival screenings, can be viewed in the renovated Vox cinema room, three films per evening. They have been chosen by audiovisual and mountain professionals. Four of these films were shot in Chamonix. Rebuffat thinks that La Verte, a 52-minute medium-length film, was made by a mountaineer, on skis, on the mountain. Looking at images of Patrick Vallencant, Jean-Marc Boivin, Pierre Tardivel, Bruno Gouvy and Vivian Bruchez, their proud heir, the viewer will cling to the steep slope. Une belle trace, directed by Frederic Degoulet and Benjamin Ribeyere tells the story of the Ultra crossing of the Mer de Glace and will also delight lovers of the Mont-Blanc massif. Symon Welfringer and Christophe Dumarest will enthuse the spectator for the repetition of the difficult route Petit au Grand Capucin. A beautiful piece of Chamonix's mountain heritage will be shown on the big screen in a short film devoted to the symbolic refuge of the Grands Mulets.

Almost all mountain disciplines are highlighted in this festival

In Nupse, the inhabitants of the mountaineering capital will have the honor of being taken away from their usual playground by the staging of the incredible opening of a new route in Nepal. Hélias Millerioux, Frédéric Degoulet and two other mountaineers won the Piolet d'Or there in 2018.

This new selection from the Chamonix Film Festival highlights almost all mountain disciplines while remaining faithful to its editorial line. An unmistakable journey  deep into Vercours, On a marche sous la Terre, which opens the first evening of this edition will give even speleology a good spot. Through rare and immersive underground images, we will be able to put ourselves in the shoes of explorers Cédric Lachat and David Parrot. In Iranian Hamid Sardar's new documentary The Valley of the Bears which stole the grand prize at the first edition is the budding anthropologist. Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, the first Nepalese woman to reach the roof of the world will be featured in Passang, while Patrick Eldinger, the star climber of the 1980s will be honored in A Life Above the Void. In the heart of Parc Couttet you can see free films such as Le Lynx by Laurent Geslin alongside the official selection, for two evenings, outdoors.
